Looooong time no see! ...And we're back for more CSS!

I hope you all had a fantastic Memorial Day weekend and have been well. It seems like eons since we last met.

Last session we did not real delve into CSS as anticipated, so tonight we will pick up there. We will explore how CSS is used to format html documents and control page layout, as well as style.

We will explore how CSS can be combined with common HTML page elements to make wondrous things such as fantabulous navigation schemes, content displays and more.

I expect that tonight's class more than any other will inspire you in regards to your own course project. Be on the lookout for examples that you think might work well for your project. If you find something, you should download and save it as a starting point for future classes. We will need to work with some examples before constructing our own masterpieces.

The assignment in conjunction with tonight's course will be Case Problem 1 on page 188. All associated files should be uploaded to your webspace and in Blackboard as a zipped file. In your webspace, please create a folder labeled 'tutorial3' in which to place the files.

When submitting your assignment, you will need to provide a link to the uploaded webspace files and a zipped file containing all html, css and image files related to Tutorial 3, Case Problem 1, in Blackboard.

This assignment is due next Monday, June 13, 2011.

Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets and their uses

Tonight we will explore how cascading style sheets are used for layout and navigation, and how to use css to your advantage.

There is no assignment in conjunction with this chapter, but I encourage you to apply what you are learning to your Final Project as we will be working with it throughout the semester.

Also, please note that we will not be meeting next Monday due to the Memorial Day holiday. Enjoy the extra day off and be safe! ( :

Developing a Website

Today we will discuss best practices for developing a website, linking pages and creating a uniform look and feel.

Case Problem 2 on page 111 is the assignment in conjunction with this tutorial. Please upload all corresponding files to your webspace and link to the uploaded content in Blackboard by Monday, May 23rd.

Choosing an Editor

Today we will discuss development environments and explore our options.

We will download and experiment with some of the options that are available and prepare our work environments for future assignments.

I have added a list of editors that are available for free (See FREE Editors), as well as some that are available to students at a discounted rate (See GOOD Editors) on the right side of the blog.. Please take some time to explore the various options and decide on a development environment that you would feel comfortable working in this semester.

Tutorial 1 - Developing a Web Page

To get your feet wet, please complete Case Problem 3 on page HTML 55 in Tutorial-1.

After you have completed steps 1 - 12 on page HTML 55:

Create a folder in your webspace named "tutorial1".
Upload all of the corresponding files for the assignment within this folder.
Submit a link to the torte.htm page and a zip file with all assignment files in Blackboard.

This assignment is due in class next Monday, May 16, 2011.

Welcome and Our First Assignment

Welcome to CISP 220. Our first assignment will be to decide on and propose topics for the Final Project and to upload the proposals to your student webspace that we will set up and test in class today.

For next week please upload your Project Proposal in Blackboard per the guidelines discussed in class today, post the link to your proposal on your student webspace.

Your Project Proposal should detail the idea and topics you will cover in your final project. Please refer to the project details for more information on the guidelines you will be following.

The proposal itself should be typed in Microsoft Word, or a similar editor, and saved as a pdf, which you will also upload to your student webspace.
